What is happiness to you? Would you say that you are happy now or are you waiting for “something” to happen to make you happy? Will a new job, a move, a new car, meeting someone special or more money make you happy? Is happiness at the end of the legendary rainbow or is it something that you have within you right now?
Well, according to a Frederick Koenig, happiness is more about what we already have and not about what we are wanting or waiting for. “We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have”. (Frederick Koenig). What a clever man, realizing that gratitude and gratefulness can be a major source of positivity and happiness. Who is he, a famous psychologist, an inspirational speaker or a multi-million dollar self-help author? No he was German inventor back in the early 1800’s, and guess what? Somewhere down the line, over the past 200 or so years, I think this message has gotten a little lost.
We need to understand that we must learn to be grateful, we must look for those things in our lives that bring us joy, and we must seek out the positive in order to be content. Happiness is not a destination, it is within us and gratefulness and gratitude will always bring happiness to light. It is impossible to be truly grateful and to be miserable.
Why not make September the “grateful month” and everyday think of wonderful things in your life that you are grateful for and appreciative of. Think of those close to you and instead of picking fault, look for their qualities. Think of work and instead of pointing out the negatives focus on the positives. Think of your friends and how they enrich your life. Look at where you live and pay attention to small things that you tend to take for granted, a friendly neighbour, a beautiful garden or some pleasant scenery. Think of things that make you smile. It is easy once you get going.
